Are you ready to make 2026 your most relaxing and fun year yet? Whether it’s a dream city break, quality time with family, or just a well-deserved few days off, your annual leave plays a big role in your wellbeing — and knowing how to use it wisely can help you squeeze every bit of value out of your entitlement.

Here’s how you can maximise your 2026 annual leave and enjoy more stress-free time off!

Ireland Public Holidays 2026 at a Glance

*In 2026, Monday 28 December is a substitute day as 26 December falls on a Saturday.

Hacking the Holidays in 2026

1. Extend Weekends

Most bank holidays fall on Mondays—like Easter Monday (April 6), May Day (May 4), or August Bank Holiday (August 3).
Hack: Book annual leave on the Friday before these holidays to enjoy a 4-day weekend instead of just 3 days off!

2. Make the Most of St. Patrick's Day

Some holidays fall midweek, such as St Patrick’s Day on Tuesday, March 17.
Hack: Take leave on Monday 16 March and Wednesday 18 March to create a 5-day break while using only 2 days of annual leave!

3. Make the Most of Substitute Days

In 2026, St Stephen’s Day falls on Saturday, December 26, so the public holiday is observed on Monday, December 28.
Hack: Combine the Christmas holidays with the New Year bank holidays and book leave on Tuesday, December 29 through Thursday, December 31 to get an extended festive break.

4. Maximise Around Christmas & New Year

Christmas Day is on Friday, December 25, and New Year’s Day is on Thursday, January 1, 2027. With St Stephen’s Day’s substitute on Monday, December 28, you can create a long holiday stretch.
Hack: Book leave on Tuesday, December 29 to Thursday, December 31, 2026, to enjoy a full 10-day holiday from Saturday, December 26 through Sunday, January 4 (2027), while using only 3 annual leave days!

Example: Stretching Your Irish Leave in 2026

  • Easter Monday (April 6): Take the full week off by booking Friday, April 3 plus Tuesday to Thursday, April 7–9 for a 10-day break using just 5 days of annual leave.
  • St Patrick’s Day (March 17, Tuesday): Book leave on Monday, March 16 and Wednesday, March 18 to enjoy 5 days off with only 2 days used.
  • Christmas & New Year: Book annual leave from Tuesday, December 29 through Thursday, December 31 for an extended festive holiday.
