Ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week in May (13th-16th), it's an ideal time to look at the significance of this week and check out how you can get involved. The theme for 2024 Mental Health Awareness Week is 'Movement: Moving more for our mental health'.

Opening up the dialogue about Mental Health in the workplace not only creates a healthier work environment, but it can also boost employee productivity, reduce absenteeism, and foster greater workforce engagement.

Move

The link between physical activity and mental health is well-documented. Exercise releases endorphins, the body's feel-good hormones, which can help to improve mood and reduce feelings of stress or anxiety. Getting up and moving about also encourages better sleep patterns, and provides an outlet for the release of daily tensions.

Whether it's hosting a walking meeting, creating an office challenge, or simply advocating for regular stretch breaks, these efforts can make a significant difference to the mental wellbeing of employees.

Talk

It's important that Employers foster an open dialogue around mental health in the workplace. Understanding, empathy, and support from colleagues and management can significantly contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.

As an Employer, HR Professional or Manager, consider how you can create an environment where employees feel comfortable discussing their mental health if they need to. This could involve organising workshops on mental health awareness, providing training for managers on mental health first aid, or implementing policies that support mental health in the workplace, such as duvet days and buddy schemes.

Breathe

In addition to physical activity and conversations, there's a whole range of holistic initiatives that can be introduced. These might include mindfulness sessions or apps, providing access to professional counselling services, or flexible working arrangements to support work-life balance.

A Healthier, Happier Workplace

So, as we prepare for Mental Health Awareness Week, let's take the opportunity to get moving, start talking and create a workplace environment where mental health is supported and valued.
