How many Bank Holidays are there in Ireland in 2023?

From 2023, there will be an additional bank holiday in Ireland to celebrate Saint Brigid's Day. This new public holiday will be celebrated on the first Monday of February, except in years where Saint Brigid's Day (1st February) falls on a Friday. The addition of this new bank holiday brings the total number of bank holidays in Ireland to 10 days.

  • Monday 2nd January - New Year's Day
  • Monday 6th February - Saint Brigid's Day
  • Friday 17th March - Saint Patrick's Day
  • Monday 10th April - Easter Monday
  • Monday 1st May - May Day Bank Holiday
  • Monday 5th June - June Bank Holiday
  • Monday 7th August - August Bank Holiday
  • Monday 30th October - October Bank Holiday
  • Monday 25th December - Christmas Day
  • Tuesday 26th December - Saint Stephen's Day

Are all Bank Holidays paid in Ireland?

Full time employees in Ireland are entitled to a benefit for Bank Holidays, which can either be:

  • a paid day off for the Bank Holiday
  • a paid day off within the month of the Bank Holiday
  • an additional day of paid annual leave
  • an additional day's pay

Do part time workers get paid Bank Holidays in Ireland?

If the employee has worked over 40 hours in the 5 weeks before the Bank Holiday, they'll also be entitled to a benefit.

For part time employees who are usually scheduled to work on the day the Bank Holiday falls, if they're asked to work, they'll recieve either an additional day's pay or an additional day of annual leave. If they're not able to work as the business is closed, they'll still recieve a day's pay.

For part time employees who wouldn't usually be scheduled to work that day, they'll still receive one-fifth of their weekly pay in compensation for the Bank Holiday.

Should Bank Holidays be included in leave entitlement?

Bank Holidays in Ireland are not included in an employee's statutory 4 weeks (20 days) of annual leave. In TimeKeeper, the Public Holiday calendar function allows you to add a list of non-deductible dates to an employee's leave record automatically.

The correct Bank Holiday dates will be loaded for the year automatically, but can be edited if needed and additional dates (such as company closure) can be added too. You can also configure that these days off are paid, so that the correct number of leave hours are added to each employee's timesheet.
